With fall just around the corner, and winter not far behind, now is the time to make sure your home is ready for the cold weather. This fall home maintenance checklist is a good place to start, and there’s no time like the present.
Organizing Your Checklist
- Interior
Most people overlook the key interior issue that will control energy costs in the long term. Properly sealing windows, doors and all other openings is a must during any season. Heating and cooling your home accounts for roughly half of the energy costs. Include caulking and weatherstripping on your checklist and give them priority.
- Exterior
Weather can damage your home in a variety of ways. For example, poor drainage around your house can result in water encroachment causing cracks in the foundation. Review all the places where masonry meets siding, and make sure your storm gutters and drains are working properly. Furthermore, fall is the time to get storm windows ready and begin removing screens.
- Appliances
With cooling season over, it doesn’t hurt to have your air conditioner checked before closing it down for the heating season. More important, of course, is a preseason maintenance tuneup for your furnace. Proper maintenance service now will mean reliable heating throughout fall and winter.
- Yard
Do not forget your yard. Now is the last chance to reseed the areas that are going bare in your yard. Also, prepare a storage area for equipment that you will not be using.
