These are some of the most common problems your AC may encounter, along with their corresponding fixes.

No Power

If your air conditioner does not turn on, there could be a number of reasons, and some of them could be serious and would require professional attention. Having said that, the reasons can also be simple and can be rectified with only a few steps.

Here are the possible reasons for an air conditioner to not turn on:

  • Thermostat Issues
  • Circuit Breaker Issues
  • Shut-off Switch
  • Inside Power Switch
  • Clogged Condensate Drain Line

If the thermostat’s screen is blank, someone may have turned it off. Simply turn it back on and see if it works. If it still won’t, check and replace the batteries. If the problem persists, you may need to get a new thermostat or call a professional.

If the circuit breaker tripped or if there are any blown fuses, try replacing the fuses first, then, reset the breaker and see if the problem is fixed. Certain air conditioners have a “reset” button and all you have to do is to press that switch and hopefully, the unit will be up and running again. If resetting the breaker and the unit doesn’t solve the problem, call a technician.

If a technician recently had done a repair or maintenance work on your air conditioner, it’s possible that he forgot to flip the shut-off switch back to the ON position, if that’s the case, simply set it to ON.

Another possible reason your AC isn’t turning on could be that your AC’s condensate drain line is clogged. It is normal for air conditioners to create condensation during operation and this water is removed from the unit through a drain line. When this drain line becomes clogged, a safety switch trips and turns off your air conditioner. If this is the issue, you may be able to clean the drain line with a vacuum cleaner. If your set up uses a condensate drain pump to remove the water from your home, it’s possible that the pump is faulty. When the pump stops working, the safety switch will trip and turn the AC off. If you are unsuccessful in fixing the problem, call an HVAC professional.

Poor Airflow

If you notice your AC is blowing air out weakly, it’s going to compromise your comfort. Here are the possible reasons for your cooling system to have poor airflow:

  • Dirty Filter
  • Duct Issues
  • Frozen Evaporator Coil
  • Blower Issues

A clogged air filter prevents your system from having sufficient airflow. The solution is to simply clean or replace the filter. Check your air conditioner’s manual for the specific type and size of filter to make sure you’re replacing it with the right one.

If the problem originates from the ducts, it is important to check the entire duct network and look for bends, kinks, cracks, leaks, and other forms of damage. If it’s only kinks or bends, you might be able to fix it on your own. However, for the more serious ones, you will need to contact a professional to apply appropriate solutions.

If your air conditioner’s coils are frozen, the system will have a hard time circulating cool air. If the coils are frozen, it could be that the filter is dirty or the vents are blocked or the blower is faulty. It could also be due to a low refrigerant charge. Try changing the filter and unblocking the vents and see if the problem is solved. For low refrigerant charge, call an AC technician.
