The government has recently extended the tax credits for new energy-efficient equipment through 2011. This makes right now an awesome time to purchase new heating and cooling equipment for your home. The qualifying equipment for the tax credits and utility rebates will save you money in two ways: the reduction of the amount you pay on your monthly utility bills and a discounted price on the new equipment.

When determining if the piece of equipment you are considering meets the criteria as stated by the Energy Star program, contact your heating and cooling contractor and ask him or her for the Manufacturer’s Certification Statement of the system you are looking at. This statement will inform you on whether or not the specific system meets the guidelines for the rebates. Before you select a new system, you should also check the current regulations from Energy Star, because the guidelines are always changing as newer and more efficient heating and cooling technology comes out.

Right now, the Energy Star program gives a tax credit to homeowners who buy a split-system air conditioner with a SEER over 16. In order to get the tax credit for installing a package-system air conditioner in your home, the SEER score must be 14 or higher to be eligible. According to the government, air conditioning models that meet Energy Star’s regulations are about 14 percent more effective than traditional air conditioning units.

By installing a new heating and cooling system in your household, you can possibly decrease your home’s energy consumption by as much as 30-40 percent. So, the tax credits will reduce the cost of installation as well as save you money through energy savings.

With the recent extension on the tax credits, now is the perfect time to get a new system. While initial costs of efficient equipment can be high, tax credits will help you drop that cost in a huge way. With new equipment, your home will be able to experience optimum comfort in a very energy-efficient way.
