Need An HVAC Contractor: 10 Tips To Find The Right One EasyFinding the right HVAC contractor to work on your home system is as easy as following 10 simple steps.

  1. Learn all you can about the insurance and licensing requirements for HVAC contractors in your state. Also be aware of the model of your current system and its maintenance history. Have this information handy when you speak to a potential contractor.
  2. Ask around for referrals. There’s no better way to judge a potential contractor than by work that the business has done in the past. If you don’t know anyone who has dealt with a particular contractor, consult Angie’s List or the local chamber of commerce.
  3. Ask a potential contractor to provide you references and call them. Ask them specifically about whether jobs were done within the time frame and budget quoted and if there were any problems during the project.
  4. Look for special offers. HVAC equipment is among the major purchases you will make during the life of your home. Make sure you purchase an Energy Star-approved model to keep your running costs low.
  5. Make sure your potential HVAC contractor offers Energy Star-approved systems. Your contractor should be able to show you long-term savings based on calculations by U.S. EPA-authorized testing sites.
  6.  Don’t select an HVAC contractor that doesn’t perform a home evaluation. The contractor should spend a good deal of time evaluating your current system to identify places where improvement is necessary.
  7. Obtain 2-3 written bids from competing HVAC contractors. Factor in both initial costs and recurring energy costs when making a decision.
  8. Before you let a contractor work in your home, get a written contract. This should detail project costs, specific model numbers, the job schedule and warranty information.
  9. Get the Energy Star Guide and study it.
  10. Pass along your knowledge to all of your friends and family.
