If you are planning repairs or upgrades to your HVAC system, do your research and hire the best possible contractor for the job. Here are some things to consider when hiring an HVAC contractor:

  • It’s always a good idea to gather quotes from multiple contractors. The lowest bid is not always the best, however, as low-priced contractors may not deliver thorough service.
  • When you’re requesting quotes, make sure that the contractor comes over and looks at the job first. Don’t accept quotes given over the phone by contractors who have not seen the job. This could lead to unforeseen problems or extra costs down the road. Their price bid should be in writing, with parts and labor itemized.
  • The contractor should be ready and willing to provide references and examples of past work. He or she should haWhat You Should Know Before Hiring An HVAC Contractorve a well-established business with extensive HVAC experience.
  • Check to be sure the contractor has the necessary licenses, certifications and insurance.  Look for memberships; are they part of the Better Business Bureau? Are they members of trade organizations? Have any of their technicians been certified by North American Technician Excellence (NATE)?
  • Inquire about the contractor’s related services or benefits. Do they offer an annual maintenance package? Are special offers available?
  • A good contractor should examine your home and estimate its heating and cooling needs.  If you’re replacing your system, the new HVAC equipment should be sized accordingly depending on heat-load and cooling-load calculations. Be sure the contractor is selecting appropriately sized equipment.
  • High-efficiency HVAC equipment is a great investment that will reduce your utility bills.  Your potential contractor should be well-versed in the latest high-efficiency technology. If possible, look for a contractor partnered with Energy Star.
  • Finally, remember that first impressions are helpful in determining a business’s potential.  Can the contractor be easily contacted? Is office staff friendly and helpful? Was the technician providing the quote professional and efficient?
